Solar panels outside Órgiva

A walk in heat that would melt a candle in minutes probably wasn’t a good idea; still, we headed off west out of Órgiva towards the solar plant. No idea why, it just seemed like a good idea at the time. With almost-crispy wild fennel and thyme each side – dried in the merciless heat with next to no water – the track of bright orange earth was like following a sat-nav display in the muted surroundings.

Partly retracing our steps of a walk we did last year (check out these bonfires) it didn’t take long to reach the fenced-off area. Thousands of panels gawped at the sun; an army of flattened cybermen (the new Doctor Who has a place not far away…).

El Morreón, with its higgledy-piggledy huts, caravans and lorries, looked like a toy town in the valley below. Even high up, children’s laughter could be heard – but it was a windless day with not a car or person in sight.

A slight detour and we came across abandoned buildings with views to die for. Below is a clip of the beautiful, but somewhat sad-looking, decrepit stones and old beams. Further along there were signs of restoration; someone is going to have a lovely home one day.

In the (very short) clip, Órgiva can just be seen in the distance as the camera swings east down the Guadalfeo valley and ends on the Sierra de Lújar. Can you feel the heat?
